Spring Clean Your Social Media Accounts
Feb 29
Spring has arrived and it’s time to get cleaning. For most people, this involves cleaning and organizing household items. Yet, we live in a digital world and organizing that world shouldn’t be ignored. My cleaning project this year involves my social networks since we know that many an unmanaged social network has led to identity theft.
As I look at my network of “friends” I am surprised by the number of people I allow to access my personal information. Just because I knew someone 20 years ago doesn’t mean they should be entrusted with the amount of personal information we all tend to share on social networks. So, when you are cleaning this spring, add your social networking accounts to your to-do list and follow a few simple “cleaning tips.”
1. Check and change your privacy settings to ensure the highest levels of protection.
2. Perform a “friend audit” – If you haven’t communicated with a person in more than a few years, and really don’t know them anymore, consider whether you want to allow them access to the information you share on your social networks. If you’re uncomfortable disconnecting from past acquaintances, review how to create groups, and place distant acquaintances into a group that is allowed only limited access to your personal information.
3. Check your apps and games – Maybe you signed up for apps or games years ago, only to have forgotten about them. You might be surprised by what data they’re allowed to access. Always check the apps terms and conditions before installing. If you aren’t comfortable with the information requested, don’t install it.
Taking just a few moments to spring clean your social media accounts is another smart way to help you protect your identity!
